Learning through the arts is now accepted
for mainstream education, but the arts for individuals with disabilities
are still seen within the scope of therapy and the need to provide a remedy
for dysfunctions. However, to meet the needs for individuals with social
cognitive deficits, art education provides a large amount of opportunities
and experiences to foster the necessary communication and creative thinking
skills.
The arts may provide many unexplored possibilities, steering
away from traditional views of providing structured learning environments.
Although these traditional structured learning environments have often
been successful in teaching basic skills, they seldom allowed individuals
to explore more creative learning and thinking skills.
Furthermore, the arts provide opportunities e.g. normalized
experiences, the opportunity to develop communication in an alternative
mode of language of nonverbal images but also foster self-help skills
and functional skills. The arts not only aids them in empowerment but
also interpret the messages of the arts, their feelings and emotions and
will thus give them the skills necessary to live enriched lives which
is necessary to address issues such as quality of life. Furthermore because
of the tangible nature of the visual arts materials can be used for advocacy
forms such as reproduction of cards, posters etc.
